Can a modular home be customized?
At Aussie Bush Cabins, we aim to make the building process as effortless as possible. Over the years, and course of building more than 40 modular homes, we’ve optimized the process from start to finish resulting in many happy new homeowners along the way.
We often get asked, can I customize my modular home? Yes, you can! In this article we’ll show you how the customization process works.
Can any of our cabins be customized
Yes, all our cabins are fully customizable.
What is the process of customization
At Aussie Bush Cabins, we make the customization process simple and enjoyable so you can bring your vision to life with confidence. Here is the process we follow:
#1 – Initial concept & ideas
Many clients come to us with a sketch, inspiration images, or even just a rough idea of what they want in a cabin. You’re welcome to draw your own layout and share your vision. From there, our team converts your ideas into a professional concept drawing that reflects your desired design, size, and functionality.
#2 – Preliminary cost estimate
Once we develop the concept drawing, we provide a price estimate to ensure the design aligns with your budget. This helps you make informed decisions early and avoid surprises later in the process. If adjustments are needed to stay within your budget, we work with you to refine the design.
#3 – Preparation of plans agreement
If you’re happy with the concept and pricing, we carry out the detailed working drawings required for construction. This stage also includes:
- Finalizing any design modifications
- Reviewing specific materials and finishes
- Confirming internal layouts and features
#4 – Final price & approval
Once the working drawings and final design decisions are complete, we provide you with a confirmed final price. With your approval, we are then ready to move into manufacturing and construction, bringing your dream cabin to life.
How do council approvals and regulations work when customizing a cabin plan?

Council approvals are a key step in the building process, and customizing your cabin doesn’t necessarily make the process slower. Instead, what matters most is how quickly decisions and documents are finalized.
Once your design and working drawings are completed and approved, we submit the plans for assessment. All plans must be certified by an independent building surveyor before they can be lodged with council. This ensures your design meets all required building codes, regulations, and safety standards.
Depending on your property’s zoning and requirements, some projects can be approved directly through the building permit process. However, in certain cases a Development Application (DA) may be required. If a DA is needed, the approval timeframe can take up to 60 days to be processed by council.
It’s important to note that timing is also influenced by how quickly decisions and documents are returned. The faster clients review and sign off on plans or respond to information requests, the sooner we can progress the application and move toward construction.
What about costs when customizing a cabin plan? Is it more expensive?
Customizing a plan doesn’t automatically mean it will cost more. It depends on the changes you want to make.
In many cases, clients add features, materials or design elements that naturally increase the price. This can include things like larger decks, upgraded finishes, custom cabinetry, or additional rooms.
Customizing can also reduce costs. Some clients choose to remove or simplify certain items to stay within budget. For example, it’s common for customers to leave out painting or floor coverings and complete these items themselves after handover. By doing this, you can personalize finishing touches in your own time and potentially save money.
Ultimately, the cost of customization is flexible. At Aussie Bush Cabins our role is to help you make informed decisions, provide various options, and ensure the design delivers the best value for you.
What are the pros and cons of customizing your modular home?

Customizing your granny flat gives you the freedom to create a space that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Consider the following:
Pros of customization
Designed for your lifestyle
Your cabin can be tailored to your needs, whether adding extra bedrooms, customizing the kitchen, designing a work from home area or incorporating storage.
Enhanced views & natural light
We often include larger windows, elevated platforms, or rotated floor plans to make the most of scenic landscapes or bush settings.
Personal style & finishes
Choose the look and feel you want, from materials and colour palettes to internal features and fixtures.
Potential considerations
Extra time for design decisions
Customization may involve additional planning and review steps. The quicker decisions are made, the faster we can progress to approvals and construction.
Budget adjustments
Adding premium features or structural changes can increase costs, although simple customizations may have little or no price impact.
Approval requirements
Custom layouts or adjustments might require extra council checks or a development application, depending on your block and local regulations. This can extend timelines in some cases.
Customization options for your cabin

Moving or Removing Walls
One of the most common ways of customizing your cabin is by changing the layout, moving, adding, or removing walls. This way we can create spaces that suit your lifestyle and needs.
Why you might do this:
-Convert a standard layout into more bedrooms for a growing family or guests.
-Open up a living area to create a larger communal space.
-Add a study or workspace.
-Adjust bathroom placement for convenience.
Windows & doors
The placement and size of windows and doors can dramatically affect the look, feel, and functionality of your cabin.
Customization examples:
Showcase views: Larger windows or sliding doors can frame water features, or mountain views.
Privacy: Smaller or fewer windows may be preferred on sides facing neighbours or roads.
Natural light & ventilation: Strategic placement of doors and windows can maximise daylight and airflow, improve comfort and reduce energy use.
Doors can also be customized such as bi-fold doors opening onto decks, or secure front doors with integrated glazing.
Kitchen upgrades
In the kitchen we offer several upgrades to make it more functional, stylish, and suited to your cooking and entertaining needs.
Customization options include:
-Dishwashers or double sinks for convenience.
-Larger appliances such as fridges, ovens, or cooktops.
-Overhead cupboards and built-in drawers to maximize storage.
-Microwave boxes, pantry space, or custom bench heights.
We’ve completed builds with fully customized kitchens, combining functionality with a modern, practical layout.
Bathroom upgrades
Bathrooms can be tailored to your style and daily requirements, creating a functional and comfortable space.
Customization options include:
-Hobless showers for accessibility and modern design.
-Cabinetry upgrades for additional storage, including vanities and linen cupboards.
-Larger or dual basins for family convenience.
-Custom layouts to suit small or uniquely shaped bathrooms.
These upgrades can make a significant difference in comfort and usability, while also enhancing the overall aesthetic of your cabin.
